Tractor Service Manuals Can Make Repair Seem Simpler

By: Christine Harrell

Homeowners, farmers, and agricultural machine repair shops usually need a tractor service manual. The manuals assist farmers and homeowners in troubleshooting equipment problems. Repair shops usually use these instructive books to repair or troubleshoot agricultural equipment. They're also helpful when somebody is reconditioning a tractor.

These tractor service manuals are needed for farm, lawn, and garden machines. Some topics that are in these books are:

* Safety pointers, operation, and rules
* Information regarding serial numbers
* Identification of the machine
* Instruments and controls: Brakes, engine speed controls, transmission shift lever and controls, PTO Clutch lever, and so on
* Operating the equipment: Breaking it in, starting it, stopping it, four-wheel drive, differential lock, three-point hitch, roll-over protection, and so on
* Lubrication and other maintenance
* Troubleshooting: Engine, brakes, hydraulics, steering, and the electrical system
* Twitching logs out of the woods and other safety or operating guidelines

Other types of details that can be found in tractor service books are assembly of the roll-over protection and/or seat belts, details about accessories and specifications, and warranty info.

Some sections that are looked at in the safety sections of these products are traveling on the road, how to keep oneself safe while riding on the equipment, hauling trailers or other equipment, operating a bucket properly, and other vital information.

Additional points include tire size, safety amounts for air pressure in them, and maintenance and/or repair of them. Information about operating the loader and installing or removing it is in these manuals.

For those who use lawn and garden machines, the info is basically identical, regarding maintenance of oil and fuel. Some of the maintenance, safety, and operating guidelines are different for a mower or Rototiller.

If a person is looking for information about hydraulic hoses, how they run, how they connect, or how to tell if they need to be replaced, this information is located in the manuals, too. Tractor service manuals also have photos that are very helpful, especially with things like applying the parking brake, installing a rear ballast, attaching other hardware, lifting the tractor bucket up to empty loads, disconnecting hoses from a loader when the loader is removed, and how to tell if there is a leak in a hose or line.

Another piece of beneficial information that is found in these manuals is on tightening hardware, the bolt sizes, grades, and how to identify certain grades of bolts. Metric bolts are marked differently than the standard bolts.
