Pirating used to be the only problem that movie producers had to worry about. You put out a DVD, someone copies it and sells it. New technology is stemming that tide. The problem now is online streaming of these movies. There are two ways to do this. You can get the movie illegally from a person to person software platform or just find an illegal site and queue up the movie. This streaming piracy has home theater manufacturers worries as well because their products have not been fully integrated with our computers yet. Person to person software has been around for years now and was originally targeted by music producers who worried about people sharing music files. This worried them because compact disk sales would drop along with concert sales. Movie producers did not flinch much until movies started being shared in the same manner. People would rip the file off of a newly purchased DVD and upload that file to a software platform to be shared. Once it is uploaded, anyone in the world can download that movie free of charge and watch it. The problem did not just extend to movie ticket sales, but DVD sales as well. Once the file is downloaded to the second party computer, that person can copy the file to a blank DVD. At this point the movie is either sold as a genuine DVD or just kept. Which of the two happens means the difference between twenty dollars lost and thousands of dollars lost in bootleg sales from that one individual. Whether a person is sharing a movie free or selling it, the movie industry looses money. The second way online piracy occurs is through sites that stream the movies openly. While the site will eventually get shut down, it is hard to keep up with them all. Some of these sites have servers in other countries that are hard to get to. The site puts the movie up letting anyone watch it. While they are not distributing copies for sale, they are giving people access to that one time watch of the movie. While DVD sales do not hurt much from this, theater sales do. These movies are uploaded and available sometimes before they even make it to theaters. If they do not make it before, they will certainly come out while the movie is in the theater. This started with people video taping the theater movie, but now people that see the movie before it hits theaters will put it online or sell a copy to people who do.
